Process mapping in healthcare – Webinar recap

by | Dec 10, 2021 | 0 comments

On the 7th of December 2021 Andy Sandford from We are Lean and Agile and Grazia Antonacci from Imperial College London hosted a webinar discussing the use and benefits of process mapping in the healthcare setting. The recording of this webinar can be accessed through the event website at: https://www.bigmarker.com/we-are-lean-and-agile/Improving-Process-Mapping-in-the-NHS?utm_bmcr_source=website. This webinar was split into two sections; the first half was a presentation by Grazia covering her research on the effectiveness of process mapping in healthcare. This covered; Why should you process map, What is process mapping, Existing research and evidence of process mapping in healthcare, How to conduct a process mapping exercise exploring the different phases of a workshop, as well as Benefits, success factors, and challenges. This 30 minute presentation gives an excellent introduction to process mapping as a concept and how it is currently being utilized in the healthcare setting, and where the possibilities are for the future. Following on from Grazia’s presentation, she and Andy discussed further details about process mapping and answered several questions asked by the live audience. After the Q&A session, Andy Sandford from We are Lean and Agile discussed how process mapping can be done better digitally rather than using whiteboards and post-it notes. The most common standard of process mapping digitally is BPMN (Business Process Mapping Notation) and defines what each shape and line mean, this can be implemented using more basic software such as Visio and Lucid chard. However, both lack the rich data and ease of change that a more advanced solution would provide. Andy goes on to discuss the effectiveness of the Engage Process Modeler, which takes a graphical approach to the BPMN standards, allowing for large amounts of rich data to be captured against each step of the process map, including the person performing the task, and the time each task took. From this data, the overall time and cost of a process map can be automatically calculated. This leads to informed decisions that can be applied to a redesign project. As a part of this event, a special offer is being run where a free Gary Vaynerchuk book can be had when you start a free trial of the Engage Process Modeler through We are Lean and Agile.
